Naturopathy

Naturopathy is an approach to health care that aims to promote, restore and maintain health by treating both the underlying causes of ill health and the presenting symptoms. It embraces the healing power of nature and the body’s ability to heal itself given the right conditions. Naturopathy blends the best of modern science and traditional medicine to offer a safe and effective way of healing.

Below is a summary of the main natural therapies a naturopath may use to support and restore a person to optimal health.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine

Herbs have been safely used for centuries to treat a wide variety of disorders and are still the most commonly used system of medicine worldwide. Not only is there a substantial and growing body of scientific research into the constituents and effects of herbs, but also the advantage of experience gathered over many centuries of traditional use.

Herbs provide a vast array of healing properties that can be effectively applied in many illnesses and diseases. Herbal medicine is particularly effective at cleansing the body and toning various organs, such as the liver, the kidneys and the circulatory and lymphatic systems.  Herbs are particularly useful for treating functional disorders such as period pain, premenstrual syndrome, tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, adrenal exhaustion and functional hypoglycaemia.

Bella Wellbeing prescribes herbs in liquid preparations (fluid extracts or tinctures). These are the most concentrated and flexible form, especially when making up individual formulas.

Nutrition

Nutrition

A naturopath believes that good nutrition is fundamental to positive health and without it the body will not grow and flourish to its full potential.  Food provides the basic building blocks that form the foundation of our health and can be an effective medicine to many health complaints and common conditions.  Our diet should be as close to nature as possible.

Naturopaths focus on providing individuals with evidence-based advice on what to eat and what food to limit or avoid.  Patients are often inundated with incorrect information about diet from media and other sources, therefore during the consultation a naturopath will aim to separate fact from fiction empowering individuals to achieve a healthy, well balanced diet and lifestyle.

Nutritional supplements may be prescribed as an effective bridge for nutritional deficiencies while the patient is making the necessary changes to their diet.

Bach Flower Essences

Dr Edward Bach a well-known English bacteriologist, physician and pathologist, discovered the Bach Flower Essences during the 1930s.  The essences are derived from 38 different flower or herbs that Dr Bach found to be useful for treating illness through correcting emotional imbalance.  Each remedy is aligned with a different emotional state and can be given alone or combined to make an individualised formula. These remedies can work in subtle or profound ways to bring about changes in emotional state that can positively influence physical health. They work particularly well for emotions such as fear; grief; anxiety and worry.
